To promote a dance studio in Australia, the most effective starting point is a fully optimised Google Business Profile combined with consistent local search presence - not a social media strategy, not paid ads, and definitely not a $2,000/month agency retainer. This guide covers each step in order of impact, so you can work through it without a marketing degree.

Why studio promotion feels impossible (and why it isn't)

Studio owners are expected to run a business, teach classes, manage staff, clean the studio and be their own marketing department simultaneously. Anybody else exhausted already? 🥵

The marketing industry doesn't help. Most marketing advice is written for e-commerce businesses or large brands with dedicated teams and uses a bunch of words that simply don't make sense if you aren't in the marketing industry day-to-day (you can find my list of confusing marketing acronyms, their definitions and examples using the dance industry here).

The good news: local marketing for a dance studio is actually simpler than the industry makes it look. Most of the highest-impact work is free or near-free, and you don't need to be everywhere - you need to be visible in the right places.

Step 1 - Get your Google Business Profile right

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important piece of marketing infrastructure a local studio has. When someone searches "pole dancing classes near me" or "dance studio [suburb]", Google surfaces GBP listings before organic website results (organic = unpaid, or in other words, just your regular website. You can read more about marketing terms like "organic" in my glossary here). A fully optimised profile with accurate categories, regular posts, and managed reviews will outperform an expensive website without one.

  • Claim and verify your profile if you haven't already
  • Set primary category to "Dance School" or "Fitness Centre" - not both
  • Add all services, with pole and aerial listed specifically
  • Upload 10-20 photos of the studio, classes, and instructors
  • Respond to every review within 48 hours - including negative ones
  • Post at least once a month to keep the listing active

Step 2 - Make your website findable

Your website needs a page that clearly states what you offer, where you are, and who it's for - with those exact words on the page, not buried in an image or a PDF. Google reads text. "Pole fitness classes in [suburb], [city]" needs to appear in your page headings (that's those "Heading 1" or "H1" formats you see on your site editor) and first paragraph.

Step 3 - Social media that actually converts

Social media for an adult dance studio is not just about getting likes from your existing students.

In mid-2025, Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) released news that Facebook and Instagram posts would now also be visible in Google search (Metricool, 2025). That means not only are those keywords important to include on your website, but now they are also important to include in your social media captions.

Unfortunately, you can't just shove all the words you want to show up on Google for into every caption (just like on your website). Your social media presence needs to give potential students enough context to feel comfortable walking through the door. The content that converts best is: real students, real training, real captions and real community moments. Not polished performance videos. Not graphic-heavy promotional posts. Not captions that make no sense.

Step 4 - Email your existing list

Most studios have a list of past enquiries and former students sitting unused in a spreadsheet, a pile of paper forms, or in studio management software, like Groovio or Studio Pro. This list converts at a dramatically higher rate than random people on social media - these people already know you. A simple 3 follow up email framework sent to lapsed students before each new term will consistently bring people back.

The one thing to do this week

Log into your Google Business Profile, check that your address, phone, hours, and category are correct, and upload three new photos of your studio. This takes 20 minutes and has measurable impact on local search visibility within 30 days.
